8 (Easy to Understand) Creation Evidences

4/28/2011

Picture
I teach 6th-7th grade Sunday school at our church.  Over the past few weeks my young teens have been asking a lot of questions about Evolution vs. Creation, so together we researched some evidences for creation and made a bulletin board in our Sunday school room.  My main objective in this project was not to provide my teens with ammunition to throw at their evolutionist science teachers, rather my main goal was to strengthen their Christian faith as they came to understand that there is much evidence for creation.  I hope it strengthens your faith in your Creator God as well!

1.  Bible

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."  Genesis 1:1

The Bible clearly states that the universe and life began by God speaking them into existence.  Genesis 1-2 records God creating the earth, seas, sun, moon, stars, fish, birds, animals, and humans.  All Christians who interpret the Bible literally have clear evidence from Scripture that God, not evolution, is the source of our existence.

Picture
2.  Fossils Show No "Missing Links"

The fossil record reflects the original diversity of life, not an evolving tree of increasing complexity.  The oldest fossils for any creature are already fully formed.  In the entire fossil record, there are no transitional forms proving a causal relationship between two different species.  From the millions of fossils we have discovered, there should be thousands of clear examples if they existed.  The lack of transitions between species in the fossil record is what would be expected if life was created by God.

Picture
3.  Polystrate Fossils

Polystrate tree trunk fossils are frequently found cutting across many geological layers.  Evolutionists claim that the geological layers of rock supposedly deposited over millions of years.  It is not possible that polystrate fossils were buried gradually over many thousands of years because the top part of any tree would have rotted away before it could be protected by sediment.  Polystrate fossils point to rapid burial and are evidence for the reality of the global flood recorded in the Bible.

Picture
4.  Earth Sustains Life

God perfectly designed the earth to sustain life.  Dozens of parameters are just right for life on earth to exist.  If the earth were just a little closer to the sun it would be too hot and the ocean's water would boil away, much further away and the earth would be covered continually in ice.  Earth's circular orbit maintains a roughly constant temperature year-round.  The earth's tilt provides the changing seasons.  The presence of the moon provides tides to cleanse the oceans.  The presence of large amounts of water is necessary to sustain life.  A minor change in these or any other parameter would make life on earth impossible.

Picture
5.  Young Earth

The theory of evolution requires that the earth be billions of years old in order for evolutionary transformations to occur.  In reality the evidence suggests that the earth is less than 10,000 years old.

-  The earth's magnetic field energy has been decaying at a factor of 2.7 over the past 1,000 years.  At this current decay rate, the earth could not be greater than 10,000 years old.

-  According to evolutionary theory, comets originated at the same time as the solar system five billion years ago.  Each time a comet revolves around the sun it loses 1-2% of its mass, so after several hundred rotations the comets disintegrate.  At this rate of loss comets could not exist longer than 100,000 years.  The existence of over 100 comets in our solar system indicates the earth is less than 10,000 years old.

-  World population growth rate in recent times is about 2% per year.  Practical application of growth rate throughout human history would be about half that number.  Starting with eight people, and applying these growth rates since the flood of Noah's day (about 4500 years ago) would give a total human population at just under six billion people.  However, application on an evolutionary time scale runs into major difficulties.  Starting with one couple just 41,000 years ago would give us a total population of 2 x 10 to the 89th power (that's a 10 with 89 0s behind it).

-  Natural radioactivity, mutations, and decay degrade DNA and other biological material rapidly.  DNA experts insist that DNA cannot exist in natural environments longer than 10,000 years, yet intact strands of DNA appear to have been recovered from fossils allegedly much older.

Picture
6.  Global Flood

The Bible records a global flood during Noah's lifetime.  The flood explains how fossils were created.  The flood explains why sea life fossils are deposited all over the globe.  The flood explains the reason dinosaurs became extinct.  The flood explains the ark found on Mt. Ararat.  The flood explains hundreds of flood traditions handed down through cultures all over the world.

Picture
7.  Intelligent Design

A living cell is so awesomely complex that its interdependent components stagger the imagination and defy evolutionary explanations.  A minimal cell contains over 60,000 proteins of 100 different configurations. The chance of this assemblage occurring by chance is 1 in 10 to the 4,478,296 power (that's a 10 with 4,478,296  0s behind it).

Picture
8.  Dinosaurs & Humans Co-Existed

Evolutionary theory claims dinosaurs and humans are separated by millions of years of evolution, but in reality they were created on the same day.  The Bible (Job 40:15-24; Job 41; Psalm 104:24-26; Isaiah 27:1) and ancient stories provide eye witness accounts of people observing dinosaurs.  Art work and various ancient artifacts depict live dinosaurs interacting with humans.  Fossilized footprints of humans and dinosaurs together have been discovered.

Easter Fun

4/25/2011

We had a fabulous week celebrating Jesus' death and resurrection and doing lots of fun Easter traditions with friends!

Christian and Abbie had several little friends over and they all dyed and decorated Easter eggs!

Christian was so excited to open his resurrection roll and see that the marshmallow was gone/dissolved (aka "Jesus has risen!"), so Abbie used the moment to swipe some of Christian's candy - look at that wicked little smile!

On Easter afternoon Christian and Abbie did an Easter egg hunt in our home!  Christian loved running around and finding eggs.  He kept shouting "I am an egg finding genius!" (from Veggie Tales: Twas the Night Before Easter).  As soon as Abbie discovered the eggs had candy inside she stopped hunting eggs and just wanted to eat treats the rest of the afternoon! :)

Redeeming Easter - Christian Easter Traditions

4/22/2011

Picture
At Christmas time I wrote a post on Santa Claus, and how Greg and I were faced with the question of how to explain him to our children.  We didn't want to reject Santa (calling him "Satan" Claus and tell our children he's a horrible lie) but we also didn't want to receive Santa (telling our children Santa is a jolly old man who flies on reindeer and delivers toys), so we decided to redeem Santa by telling our children the truth about the generous, Christian man St. Nicholas and allowing Santa Claus to remind us of him.

This spring as Easter approached Christian began asking me questions about the Easter Bunny at the mall, and I was faced again with the hard question of how to explain a cultural icon to my children.  This situation was much more difficult than explaining Santa Claus because there is not a generous, Christian man represented by the Easter Bunny.  However, I still felt compelled to neither reject nor receive Easter traditions but to redeem them!

Greg and I have chosen not to reject Easter traditions (i.e. refusing to participate in egg hunts or even call Resurrection Sunday "Easter") but we have also decided not to completely receive Easter traditions (i.e. getting so caught up in the hype of egg hunts and the Easter Bunny that we forget to celebrate Jesus' resurrection).  Greg and I have six Easter traditions we plan on doing with our children each year, and I feel that each one honors Jesus Christ.
Picture
Tradition 1:  Church

Our family goes to church together on Good Friday evening to remember Jesus' death and we also go to church together on Sunday morning to celebrate Jesus' resurrection.  We go to church every Friday evening and Sunday morning, so this is definitely more than an annual tradition for our family but it is vital to our understanding of the true meaning of Easter.

Tradition 2:  Good Friday & Easter Breakfasts
Picture
Hot Cross Buns

On Good Friday each year I make hot cross buns.  Hot Cross Buns are a little time-consuming (roughly 3 1/2 hours preparation time), so I only make them on Good Friday making the tradition all the more special to our family.  On Good Friday we talk a lot about the cross and why today is a very important day to us, so beginning our morning with icing crosses on sticky buns is a wonderful way to start these conversations.

Ingredients:
3/4 cup warm water
3 Tbs. butter
1 Tbs. instant powdered milk
1/4 cup white sugar
3/4 tsp. salt
1 egg
1 egg white
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 Tbs. active dry yeast
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 egg yolk
2 Tbs. water
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
2 tsp. milk

Directions:
1.  Put warm water, butter, skim milk powder, 1/4 cup sugar, salt, egg, egg white, flour, and yeast in bread maker and start on dough program.  (Takes approximately 1 ½ hours.)

2.  Punch down on floured surface, cover, and let rest 10 minutes.

3.  Shape into 12 balls and place in a greased 9 x 12 inch pan.

4.  Cover and let rise in a warm place till double, about 35-40 minutes.  -OR-  For overnight: Cover tightly with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator overnight or up to 16 hours.  Remove the rolls from the refrigerator and place in an oven that is turned off.  Fill a shallow pan 2/3-full of boiling water and set on the rack below the rolls.  Close the oven door and let the rolls rise until they look slightly puffy; approximately 30 minutes.  Remove the rolls and the shallow pan of water from the oven.  Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

4.  Mix egg yolk and 2 tablespoons water.  Brush on balls.

5.  Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes.  Remove from pan immediately and cool on wire rack.

6.  Mix together powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk.  Drizzle a cross with the icing.

Resurrection Rolls

On Easter morning we make resurrection rolls together.  Each part of the preparation process is symbolic.  The marshmallow being dipped in butter and cinnamon represents Jesus' body being prepared for burial, the marshmallow being placed in the crescent roll represents Jesus' burial, and after the baking process is complete the marshmallow has dissolved leaving an empty tomb (very exciting for toddlers)!  These tasty treats are perfect for Resurrection Sunday morning because they take less than 1/2 an hour to prepare (important for a family getting ready for church) and remind us of the joy of Jesus' resurrection that we are about to celebrate.

Ingredients:
2 (10 ounce) cans refrigerated crescent dinner rolls
16 large marshmallows
1/2 cup melted butter
4 Tbs. ground cinnamon
4 Tbs. white sugar

Directions:
1.  Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).  Lightly grease a baking sheet.

2.  Separate crescent rolls into individual triangles.

3.  Read John 19:38-42.  Explain that we are going to pretend to be Joseph and Nicodemus preparing aloe and myrrh.  Melt the butter in a shallow pan.  In a small bowl, mix together cinnamon and sugar.

4.  Explain that we are going to pretend to be Joseph and Nicodemus placing the aloe and myrrh on Jesus body to prepare it for burial.  Dip a marshmallow into melted butter, then roll in sugar mixture.

5.  Explain that we are going to pretend to be Joseph and Nicodemus placing Jesus body in the tomb.  Place marshmallow into the center of a dough triangle.  Carefully wrap the dough around the marshmallow.  Pinch the seams together tightly to seal in marshmallow as it melts.  Place on a baking sheet.  Repeat.

5.  Bake in a preheated oven until golden brown, about 15 minutes.  Explain that we are pretending to be Jesus followers waiting three long days while Jesus remained dead in the tomb.

6.  Read Matthew 28:5-8.  Explain that we are going to pretend to be the women followers of Jesus who went to the tomb and discovered it was empty!  Have the children open their tombs and joyfully discover that they are empty!  Enjoy eating the delicious resurrection rolls!

Picture
Tradition 3:  Giving Easter Treats

We always make lots of Easter treats to give to our friends and neighbors!  This year we had five fabulous youth group girls over and help us make pink and purple rise krispie treat eggs, bunny, chick, and egg cookies and cupcakes, and flower chocolates on pretzel sticks!  These treats were delicious, and hopefully we showed the love of Jesus first to our youth group girls while they were with us and second to our neighbors who received the yummy treats.

Picture
Tradition 4:  Easter Movies & Stories

The Greatest Adventure: Easter Story movie is a wonderful, short movie that begins with Palm Sunday and ends with Jesus' ascension.  We have watched this movie together almost every day this past week.  This movie is wonderful because it allows children to catch a glimpse of Jesus' suffering without being too intense for them to handle.  We also watch Veggie Tales: Twas the Night Before Easter and Veggie Tales: An Easter Carol (almost all the Veggie Tale movies are on Netflix - super blessing)!

In addition to Easter movies we also read the Biblical story of Easter in the God's Story for Me children's Bible we read each night for family devotions.

Picture
Tradition 5:  Dying Easter Eggs

Every year we have several of Christian and Abbie's little friends over to our home to dye Easter eggs together.  They always have a fabulous time dying, painting, glittering, and decorating their eggs.  I embrace every opportunity to create memories with my children and reach out to their friends.

Picture
Tradition 6:  Resurrection Eggs

This is a new tradition to our family that we will be starting next Easter.  We have ordered our set and are excited to use them next year!  This set is typically $16 but is on sale for only $13 at Shop Family Life.  You can also easily make your own set with a regular egg carton, 12 plastic eggs, and a little creativity!

The children open up each of the twelve eggs which contains little symbols that represent part of the Easter story.  As the children systematically open the twelve eggs and each tiny object is discussed the story of Easter is told.  We feel this will be a wonderful way to kick-off our annual, Easter afternoon, family Easter egg hunt.

On Easter afternoon our kids love collecting their brightly colored eggs filled with jellybeans that we have hidden around the house.  Easter morning they also receive Easter baskets filled with goodies.  We are honest with our kids and tell them Daddy & Mommy hid the Easter eggs and gave them the baskets of goodies.  We explain to them that some people like to pretend that the Easter Bunny delivered the treats, but they are in on the "secret."  We have told our kids that even though they know the Easter Bunny isn't real, they shouldn't ruin the fun for some of their friends who believe in the Easter Bunny by telling them he's a fake.

What do bunnies and eggs have to do with Easter?

Eggs symbolize new life about to emerge, and have been used as traditional symbols of springtime and rebirth by various cultures throughout history.

Bunnies likely originated because the British pagans used to celebrate a spring feast in honor of the goddess Eostre, who was represented by the hare.  Rabbits are conspicuous in the spring because they breed... like rabbits, and have also been used as traditional symbols of springtime and rebirth by various cultures throughout history.

The first known mention of the actual Easter Bunny comes from Germany in the 1600s, where the bunny was known as the Osterhase (pronounced “Oschter Haws”).  German immigrants came to America with a tradition in which the kids would build nests around the house out of hats and bonnets, and if they had been good children, Osterhase would leave brightly-colored eggs in the nests.  The tradition grew and spread over time, and eventually Osterhase turned into the Easter Bunny and began giving out chocolate and candy as well as eggs.
Why do we call Resurrection Sunday “Easter”?

The celebration of the Day of Resurrection fell on the month of Eastre (West Saxon) or Eostre (Northumbrian), so the celebration was associated with the name of a month.  The month's name was probably derived from a goddess of spring named Eostre, in whose honor feasts were celebrated in that month.  The celebration of the Day of Resurrection replaced the old spring feast of Eostre, therefore the Christian holiday came to be called Easter.

Is it wrong to use the name “Easter” if it came from the name of a month that was named after a pagan goddess?

No – what is most important is what the word means today.  If you use the word "Easter" in normal speech today, people make no association with an ancient pagan religion.  Hundreds of millions of Christians use "Easter," and have done so for centuries, with the meaning of "the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus."

Additionally, there are many words we use that have long-passed connections in pagan culture or religion, but their meaning has been changed.  When we talk about going to church on "Sunday" we don’t worry about the fact that this day in the Roman calendar was for the worship of the sun.  And when we pass into January we mark a new beginning with little concern that the word "January" comes from the Roman god Janus, the god of doorways.  Many of the words we use have some peculiar etymology.  What matters is what the words mean to us today in normal spoken language.
Is it wrong to be involved in American culture surrounding Easter (eggs, bunnies, name “Easter”)?

No - in Scripture God reveals himself to humanity by reaching people through their culture.

Jesus took on flesh and intervened in a point of time in history to bring eternal life through faith in Him.  He did not disassociate from relics of the culture but used them to display His glory through His miracles.

Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman in John 4:1-26 using water analogies she could understand when revealing Himself to her as Messiah.  He used parable to help people understand spiritual truths in their own context.

Paul does this on Mars Hill in Acts 17:16-32.  Paul did not approach the Athenian court, slashing and burning their idols for Jesus.  No, he used the pagan thought and symbolism to point to Christ, even citing their own poetry to identify who this God is that they consider 'unknown'.

Christians should engage in contextualization - expressing the message of the gospel and worship in the language or forms of the local people - that in no way implies doctrinal compromise.  Christians around the world have sought to redeem the local culture for Christ, and we should do the same.

Instead of rejecting eggs and bunnies, why not use them to highlight the resurrection?  By giving Easter treats and dying eggs with friends, we will open doors for spiritual discussions.  I personally think we can do more harm by chastising the use of these objects/ideas than by using them to point to Christ.  It is not like the ones who incorporate bunnies and eggs into the holiday are worshiping a pagan deity, but it is a meaningless symbol that produces a lot of fun.  Why not turn it into something meaningful for the cause of Christ?

Persecuted Chinese Church

4/21/2011

Picture
My heart is aching today for a very special sister of mine in China.  Her house church in Beijing has experienced a lot of persecution, and she frequently writes me emails detailing her church's situation so I can be in prayer for them.  I usually keep all of this information to myself in order to protect the anonymity of her and her church family, but a few days ago an article was published in the New York Times about her church’s situation so I don’t think a short post on my blog can do any additional harm.

My friend wrote me earlier this week:
"I guess you may have heard something from press about our family.  We have no place to go and do not have ordinary Sunday meeting.  Wish our situation will turn better soon.  And because of that, my wedding may be held in a very simple way."

My heart breaks for her not only because her wedding plans may be ruined (and for any girl you can imagine what that might feel like) but mostly because her house church is being destroyed by the authorities.  In past years her church's persecution  caused the believers to be strengthened, encouraged, and through it they grew in numbers, but recently the persecution has become so intense that the church is weak, discouraged, and shrinking in numbers.

In the New York Times article I was struck by a short paragraph of an event that happened while I was living in Beijing:
"Shouwang's latest troubles began again three years ago, shortly after its application for official recognition was denied.  Officers from the Beijing Public Security Bureau burst into Sunday services, pronounced the gathering illegal and wrote down the personal details of everyone in the room, one by one.   In the days that followed, calls were made to congregants' employers or college administrators.   Many congregants say they were threatened with dismissal from jobs or school if they did not switch to an official church."

My sweet sister was amongst those congregation members whose personal details were gathered.  She came to my apartment that week and told me all about the raid.  She could have given false information about herself, the officers would not have discovered the truth until later, but she chose to boldly tell the truth about herself.  In the weeks that followed she was severely persecuted by her college principals for renouncing the Communist Party and was threatened to be expelled from college in her final year.

Amidst this persecution my sister and her church family have the most amazing attitudes.  They pray for those persecuting them and count it a privilege to suffer for Jesus.  Their boldness and positive attitudes shining for Jesus brings me to tears and challenges me!

So I ask – please join me in praying for our sister and her church family!  Ask God to soften the Beijing officials hearts so that this wonderful group of believers can continue to grow and shine for Jesus!  Ask God to give the believers strength amidst this persecution because they are so discouraged right now!  Ask God to help the gospel spread in China even amidst persecution!

Revolve Tour

4/5/2011

Last weekend I took our awesome youth group girls to the Revolve Tour!  It's a Christian conference for teenage girls with amazing concerts, speakers, drama - super fun!  We went to the conference in Hartford, CT and there were over 4,000 teenage girls present - amazing!
Picture
Picture
One of my favorite parts of the retreat was my New York girls' reactions to the city of Hartford, CT.  Here are my three favorite quotes:
"Where are all the people? Isn't this supposed to be a city?"
"This city is sooo much cleaner than New York!"
"I just saw a car wait for a person! People do that?!?"
Picture
At the conference the girls were challenged to consider sponsoring a World Vision child.  For just $35 a month we can provide a child with food, clean water, clothing, medical care, and education - that's just amazing!  We chose three Malian children to sponsor as a youth group!  Each teen just needs to bring $1 a week to youth group and we can care for three Malian children - that rocks my socks off! :)

By the way, our youth group raised almost $6,000 through 30 Hour Famine last month!  Teenagers can change the world!

Adoption Update

4/4/2011

Today Greg and I completed our couple interview with our adoption agency.  We are now waiting for a few reference forms to come in, Greg will do a personal interview, I will do a personal interview, we will finish our family profile, and then (drum roll please....) WE WILL BE WAITING FOR A BABY!!!  Our hope is that we will be waiting for a baby by May - hooray! :)

What does it mean to be "waiting for a baby"?
It means that we will be done with our homestudy, interviews, and paperwork, and that our family profile is being shown to birth moms who can choose us to be their baby's family.

How long will it take to be placed with a baby?
It could be 2 weeks or 18+ months.  It all depends on when/if a birth mom chooses us.  If a birth mom chooses us after she has delivered her baby in the hospital, then we will most likely meet our baby within 2 weeks.  If a birth mom chooses us when she is 2 months away from her due date, then we will most likely meet our baby in a little over 2 months.  If a birth mom chooses not to select parents for her baby (perhaps she feels this process is too painful and decides to simply allow the agency to select a good family for her), then the agency chooses the family who has been waiting the longest and that family has typically been waiting around 18 months.

How old will your baby be when you take him/her home?
Our baby will be 2 weeks old when we meet our little one and take him or her home.  In the state of Tennessee (where our adoption agency is located) a birth mom can not legally give her baby up for adoption until 3 days after the baby's birth.  After she chooses to give her baby up for adoption, she has 10 days to change her mind and it takes around 10 days for the paperwork to be processed which gives us permission to take the baby out of Tennessee to New York.  After those 10 days have passed Greg and I will fly to Tennessee and meet the newest little Vruggink!  (If the birth mom wants to meet us then we will be happy to meet her, but if she doesn't want to meet us then that's fine too.)

Why did you choose an adoption agency in Tennessee?
We heard about our adoption agency through our wonderful friends, Dan and Alana Rasbach, who adopted their precious little boy through this great organization.  Our agency is a crisis pregnancy center which ministers to women with unplanned pregnancies by providing counseling and medical care.  Our agency gently encourages these ladies to choose to give life to their child and make an adoption plan for their baby.  In researching adoption, we realized it was better to have an agency who we respect and trust across the country then to choose an agency nearby simply out of convenience.  There is a little more paperwork and complications with us choosing an agency so far away, but we love the ministry of our organization are are thrilled to be partnering with them in helping a woman choose life and giving an orphan a home!

Any more questions?
Feel free to visit the Adoption page on our website or email us!  We love to talk about adoption! :)

We are sooo excited to be waiting for a baby soon!!!  I know that once we are officially waiting almost every time the phone rings my heart is going to jump with excitement!  Could this be the phone call telling us a birth mom has chosen us?!?  I also know that if we aren't chosen quickly I will start to become impatient and frustrated, so please pray for us!  Pray for our family to trust God completely with His timing in making our family of four a family of five! :)

Family Car Stickers

Webster Visit

4/1/2011

Last weekend the amazing Mike and Lisa Webster came to visit us!  We had a wonderful time with them!  The Websters were jumped on at 6:30/7:00 AM every morning and then spent the whole day playing with the kiddos.  Lisa helped teach Abbie how to pedal a tricycle, the guys grilled, and of course there were lots of snuggles, reading, and tickle times!  What amazing god-parents our kids have! :)
