Adoption Update

4/4/2011

Today Greg and I completed our couple interview with our adoption agency.  We are now waiting for a few reference forms to come in, Greg will do a personal interview, I will do a personal interview, we will finish our family profile, and then (drum roll please....) WE WILL BE WAITING FOR A BABY!!!  Our hope is that we will be waiting for a baby by May - hooray! :)

What does it mean to be "waiting for a baby"?
It means that we will be done with our homestudy, interviews, and paperwork, and that our family profile is being shown to birth moms who can choose us to be their baby's family.

How long will it take to be placed with a baby?
It could be 2 weeks or 18+ months.  It all depends on when/if a birth mom chooses us.  If a birth mom chooses us after she has delivered her baby in the hospital, then we will most likely meet our baby within 2 weeks.  If a birth mom chooses us when she is 2 months away from her due date, then we will most likely meet our baby in a little over 2 months.  If a birth mom chooses not to select parents for her baby (perhaps she feels this process is too painful and decides to simply allow the agency to select a good family for her), then the agency chooses the family who has been waiting the longest and that family has typically been waiting around 18 months.

How old will your baby be when you take him/her home?
Our baby will be 2 weeks old when we meet our little one and take him or her home.  In the state of Tennessee (where our adoption agency is located) a birth mom can not legally give her baby up for adoption until 3 days after the baby's birth.  After she chooses to give her baby up for adoption, she has 10 days to change her mind and it takes around 10 days for the paperwork to be processed which gives us permission to take the baby out of Tennessee to New York.  After those 10 days have passed Greg and I will fly to Tennessee and meet the newest little Vruggink!  (If the birth mom wants to meet us then we will be happy to meet her, but if she doesn't want to meet us then that's fine too.)

Why did you choose an adoption agency in Tennessee?
We heard about our adoption agency through our wonderful friends, Dan and Alana Rasbach, who adopted their precious little boy through this great organization.  Our agency is a crisis pregnancy center which ministers to women with unplanned pregnancies by providing counseling and medical care.  Our agency gently encourages these ladies to choose to give life to their child and make an adoption plan for their baby.  In researching adoption, we realized it was better to have an agency who we respect and trust across the country then to choose an agency nearby simply out of convenience.  There is a little more paperwork and complications with us choosing an agency so far away, but we love the ministry of our organization are are thrilled to be partnering with them in helping a woman choose life and giving an orphan a home!

Any more questions?
Feel free to visit the Adoption page on our website or email us!  We love to talk about adoption! :)

We are sooo excited to be waiting for a baby soon!!!  I know that once we are officially waiting almost every time the phone rings my heart is going to jump with excitement!  Could this be the phone call telling us a birth mom has chosen us?!?  I also know that if we aren't chosen quickly I will start to become impatient and frustrated, so please pray for us!  Pray for our family to trust God completely with His timing in making our family of four a family of five! :)
